Ingredients

Simple syrup has a 1:1 ratio of sugar and water.

Granulated sugar: Sugar is gluten free, but not all sugar is vegan. If you have dietary restrictions, make sure to read the labels.

Water: Using tap water is ok or the water you prefer.

What is Simple Syrup Used For?

Simple syrup is water and sugar boiled together to create a sweetener. You can add this to hot drinks, or cold drinks like tea, coffee, lemonade, mocktails, anything that needs a little sweetening up!

Why is simple syrup better for cold drinks? If you added regular granulated sugar into an iced drink, it wouldn’t dissolve very well. Simple syrup is boiled down sugar in water so it can be easily added and stirred in!

You can also brush it onto cake layers or cupcakes to keep the cake moist. This is especially helpful if you are making a cake that is sitting out for a long time, like a homemade wedding cake.

How to Store

Storing the syrup is easy! I like to store it in a glass mason jar with a lid.

It will keep in the refrigerator for up to one month. You can also freeze it for up to a month. Try to freeze it in an ice cube tray for individual servings so you don’t have to worry about defrosting the whole thing.

Brush On Cakes

Make sure your cakes are cooled and leveled. Then, using a squirt bottle or a silicone pastry brush, squirt or dab syrup evenly over the layer. Keep in mind that less is more! If you add too much, the texture of the cake will become soggy.

The syrup doesn’t alter the taste of the cake, unless you’ve added additional ingredients for flavoring.
