Iced London Fog Tea Latte With Cold Foam

What Does an Iced London Fog Tea Latte Taste Like?

An iced London fog is bright and citrusy from the aromatics of bergamot oil with the subtle floral hint from added lavender.

It pairs well with milk, vanilla, and a sugar which lifts it up to be slightly sweet, citrusy and refreshing all at once.

Note that bergamot oil is very fragrant and may be considered an acquired taste to some. A few years ago, it was not my favorite drink until I tried a London fog that was made in a cafรฉ exceptionally well – it grew on me!

Are London Fogs Good Iced?

Yes! Classic London fog’s are served hot (yum). But in the warmer months you may crave an iced drink, and this latte tastes just as delicious as the warm version.

Tip: Double this recipe for 4 servings and save some tea in a jar in the fridge for the next day! Don’t add the milk and cold foam until you are ready to serve.

Is an Iced London Fog Sweet?

This depends on the sweetener that you use and how much of it you add. I prefer around 1/2 teaspoon of honey or simple syrup to give it a little boost of sweetness (although sometimes I add 1 teaspoon if Iโ€™m feeling especially depleted). Adding a sweetener is not necessary but does pair well.

Even better, if you can find a honey that has floral notes, it will add to the aromatics! I always suggest buying honey locally to support the bees in your area. We love the bees here ?

Then, you can add in vanilla extract if you prefer. Vanilla extract gives the drink a slightly warmer flavor.

The best part about learning how to make tea lattes at home, is that you have the ability to add and change the recipe to make the perfect tea latte of your dreams.

Does an Iced London Fog Have Caffeine?

Yes, there is caffeine in black tea. Because the way teas are processed is unique to each brand, there is not one specific amount of caffeine. On average, there is most likely a range between 40-80 milligrams of caffeine in an iced London fog.

The brand I use, Harney & Sons, lists that there is between 40-60 milligrams of caffeine in their teas. They also sell a decaffeinated earl grey tea which I have tried and enjoy when I have a craving at night!

What is Cold Foam?

Cold foam is a frothy milk-based topping that you can serve over iced coffee or iced tea. While I feel it is more rare to get cold foam on iced tea, these seems to be growing in popularity thanks to popular coffee chains making sweet cold foam.

To make it, you aerate cold milk until it is very light and foamy. There are many ways to make cold foam! You can use a hand held frother, a blender, a French press, a cold foam machine, and even by shaking milk vigorously in a jar. You donโ€™t need anything too fancy. (Although I did invest in a cold foam machine and it is worth it.)

how to make cold foam with a frother

When I am short on time, I like to use a hand held frother pictured above.ย I got this one on Amazon and it has lasted two years!ย I love it.

How to Make Cold Foam

Tip 1:ย Not-fat milk works the best due to high protein which makes thicker froth that wonโ€™t collapse.

Tip 2:ย Making sweet cold foam is easy. Add simple syrup to your milk before frothing.

Different Techniques

There are many ways to make cold foam, but the thickness/sturdiness of the foam will range depending on the technique. Shaking milk in a jar creates the least “thick” foam, unless you are really shaking hard, its tough to aerate milk in this way. A milk frother creates nice even cold foam and an electric milk foam machine creates the thickest foam.

  1. Shake it!ย While this way is โ€œeasierโ€ because you donโ€™t need to buy a tool, this is going to be the most tiring way! (You get an arm workout in) For 2 servings, add 1/2 cup of skim milk (and 1-2 tsp of simple syrup if you want sweet cold foam)ย into a jar with a well sealed lid. Shake the jar for a minute or two vigorously to get some foamy consistency.
  2. Milk frother. A hand held milk frother is affordable and easy to use. I swear by mine! I stick it down into the bottom of a tall glass and then turn it on. It can splash on you, which is why I recommend turning it on once inside the glass.
  3. An electric milk foam machine. This is what I use in the video. I purchased this on Amazon almost four years ago but it is no longer listed. Here is another brand that I have tried. First you add your milk to the max fill line and can choose from four settings, which includes a cold foam setting.

How to Make an Iced London Fog

  • Add two cups of boiled water into a mug or jar and steep 2 earl grey tea bags for 5 minutes or follow the instructions for your brand of tea steep times.
  • Then, let the tea cool down for 10-15 minutes. To quicken the cooldown time, put the jar in the fridge. If you are short on time, you can add a good amount of ice, mix it quickly and serve right away.
  • Once the tea has cooled down, you can add ice to two glasses. Add however much ice you prefer to create your perfect iced tea latte.
  • Froth milk using whatever method you have available. For this recipe,ย I used a special frothing machine that I believe is completely worth the investmentย especially if you love making drinks at home. But please see above under โ€œHow to Make Cold Foamโ€ for other ways.
  • Add 1 cup of tea and 1/4 cup of milk to each glass and then stir in your sweetener. If you’re adding honey, make sure to stir well until the honey dissolves.
  • This is when you can add in your optional vanilla extract and stir.
  • Optional: add your cold foam on top.
  • Optional: sprinkle some dried lavender buds. Then your tea latte is ready to enjoy!

Iced London Fog Tea Latte with Cold Foam

An iced London fog is made with earl grey tea, milk, and sugar. It's a citrusy blend of black tea, oil of bergamot and a hint of lavender.
Author Alissa
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings 2 Cups

Ingredients

  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 earl grey tea bags
  • 1 cup whole milk, or milk of your choice (whole milk makes it creamier)
  • 2 tsp honey, or simple syrup, or maple syrup
  • ice
  • dash vanilla extract optional
  • pinch dried lavender buds to garnish optional

Cold Foam

  • 1/2 cup skim milk
  • 2 tsp simple syrup optional, to make sweet cold foam

Instructions

  • Add two cups of boiled water into a mug or jar and steep 2 earl grey tea bag for 5 minutes or follow the instructions written for your tea steep time.
  • Let the tea cool. To quicken the cooldown time, put the jar in the fridge. If you are short on time, you can add ice, stir and serve right away.
  • Add ice to two glasses.
  • In each glass, pour 1 cup of tea, add 1/4 cup milk, and 1 tsp honey into each glass and stir until the honey dissolves. Optional: Add a dash of vanilla extract into each glass and stir.
  • Optional: Sprinkle some dried lavender buds on the top. They look pretty but they do add a nice floral taste.

Cold Foam

  • Froth the skim milk using whatever method you prefer (electric milk frother, handheld frother, or shaken in a sealed jar).
  • Add to the top of your tea latte. Sprinkle dried lavender buds to garnish.

Notes

  • Divide the recipe in half for a single serving. This recipe can also be doubled for 4 servings.ย
  • The best way to avoid watered down tea from added ice, is to prepare the tea ahead so it can be cold before serving.
  • Earl grey tea tastes different depending on the brands. I find some teas are more fragrant with bergamot oil, while some brands are more floral. My favorite is Harney & Sons tea.
  • Not-fat milk works the best due to high protein which makes thicker froth that won’t collapse. Non-dairy milks can work, such as unsweetened soy milk which is the highest in protein.
